Victimhood and its impact on self-perception

A lot of our struggles have become internalized nowadays – We spend more time obsessing and overthinking scenarios. Depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses are plaguing the masses today. But there’s another bad actor, very obscure and sometimes almost goes undetected until it’s too late – Victimhood.

Victimhood is often the fallout of extreme negative thinking. Victim mentality digs its roots deep when someone stresses over uncontrollable things and settings. Ask yourself this – Would you blame the world or yourself for any setback or failure you face? If your answer resonates with the prior statement, you fall into the same kind of victimhood mentality.

Victimhood might seem like just another maladroit behavioral trait, but it’s extremely dangerous and detrimental to a person’s life. If you find yourself in the midst of conflicting emotions and blame the world for every minor problem you have, it slowly corrodes your positive thinking and optimistic vision. Victimhood is like a domino stack falling. It transgresses into very important parts of our lives – including but not limited to career growth, job prospects, and relationships

When we constantly think about negative scenarios or how every little inconvenience or setback is the world’s fault and not ours, we let our judgment get muddled with the emotions of self-pity and victimhood. And very soon, people reach a stage where they might even say no to an extremely good opportunity just because they already believe that the odds are stacked against them!

Well, the good thing is that we can proactively take steps to course-correct before it’s too late. A person needs to handle their past trauma, setbacks, and pain. They need to be strong enough to put their face up to their demons and handle them. People need to be able to own up to their mistakes, shortcomings, and failures. This kicks off an important emotion – Acceptance. And with acceptance starts the journey of knowledge. Your mind becomes more open to new things and experiences. People also need to practice gratitude. Being grateful for the present. Being grateful to be alive. And last but not least – People need to think positively.

Victim mentality is a dangerous and devious demon thriving off of a negative mindset. Course correction is always an option for people who really want to make a positive change in their lives. As the extremely old and cliched adage goes – It’s never too late! A person who can get rid of a negative mindset is deemed to get out of the chains and shambles holding them back and make something better of their lives.
